Greetings Festivarians,

The GreencardsFor three consecutive years The Greencards filled the Planet Bluegrass festival stages (Telluride Bluegrass and two years at RockyGrass) with dexterous acoustic picking, warm harmonies, sophisticated songcraft, and a uniquely non-American take on American music. With members bred in England and Australia, The Greencards “play traditional American music better than most American musicians, no doubt because they have such an overwhelming respect for the source material." (Washington Post)

We couldn't bare the thought of making it through the year without a live set from The Greencards. So this Saturday, October 18, we celebrate autumn and the final show of the Wildflower Concert Series season with our favorite Australian-English Americana group.

The GreencardsThis show caps a year in which The Greencards earned a Grammy nomination for Best Country Instrumental Performance for their song “Mucky The Duck,” and signed with Sugar Hill Records. Their latest album, Viridian, reached #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart – the first international band to achieve this status.

From Paper Bird to Packway, Ben & Adam to Darrell Scott, this has been an inspiring autumn of music on the Planet. This Saturday we'll cap it all off with one of the hottest young bands in roots music - a group that so impressed Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson that they brought them on their tour of minor league ballparks several years ago. (Give a listen to a live set on NPR or watch some live videos from their 200+ shows per year).

Tickets ($20) are available Packway Handle Band in the Wildflowernow - or 800-624-2422. Tickets will also be available at the door, cash-only. We'll be serving New Belgium beer, wine, and hot drinks all night in the indoor bar, while the bonfire burns next to the St Vrain River before, during, and after the show. Parking is free and convenient on the Ranch - a scenic 25 minutes north of Boulder (view map). Gates open at 7pm, music starts at 8pm.

As we mentioned in the last "Notes from the Planet" it's also time to begin preparing for next year's Festivals, and our 2009 online lotteries. Due to overwhelming demand for our most popular tickets, we will again be using an online lottery system to sell these tickets in as fair a manner as possible. If you are considering attending any of these 2009 events make sure to circle these dates on your calendar:

Once the respective lottery has opened you'll be able to leisurely fill out the simple online form anytime during this period - no stress, no waiting on the phone. We'll have more details in the coming weeks. For now, just make sure you have those dates highlighted - maybe remind a festivarian friend so no one misses out.

The International Bluegrass Music Association awards were held several weeks ago in Nashville. Congratulations to all of this year's award winners - many of whom are longtime friends of Planet Bluegrass.

Darrell Scott in the WildflowerAnd congratulations to Jim Colbow, Stephanie Hoffman, and Caroline Willingham-Higgins. Their names were chosen from all the 2008 festival survey responses to win pairs of tickets to our 2009 festivals. Thanks to everyone who took a few minutes to help us improve next year's festivals. We listen to every single comment and continue to welcome your thoughts - email us at

Just a few short months ago we were tempering our sadness over the end of the summer festival season with the excitement for the fall Wildflower Concert Series. With just one show remaining this fall - this Saturday - you have but one final chance to enjoy the Planet Bluegrass Ranch in 2008. We hope you're able to join us for this very special night of music in Lyons.
